Last month I had the pleasure of sharing with you our commitment to donate $150, upon closing, to my client's local charity of choice. It's an opportunity I cherish.
I am very pleased to share with you the first recipient of this new installment—The Bootstraps Foundation (BF). And, I couldn't be happier. This fine charitable organization provides annual college scholarships to four local graduating seniors who have overcome immense adversity and incredibly dire circumstances to persevere and achieve. The recipients, who have overcome many serious roadblocks in their young lives such as abuse, homelessness, and blindness, are selected by board members who are presented dozens of applicants.
I first became actively involved when my husband George, a former BF board member and leader in the Kiwanis Club of Nashville (which is closely aligned with the foundation), included me in the May banquets which celebrate and honor recipients. These events each year are so inspirational! Realizing this organization is empowering these achievers to advance their education and opportunities really touches my heart. Investing in them is always a privilege and a pleasure.
Bootstraps was established here in Nashville in 1986 to champion the higher educational needs of Middle Tennessee students who have demonstrated the effort, determination and will to succeed in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity. These recipients are role models to all in their paths, including fellow students, teachers, principals, friends and businessmen and women like me.
Having granted over $1 million in scholarships since its inception, the organization solicits one nomination per area high school for consideration to earn the annual award. High schools in Cheatham, Davidson, Robertson, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson and Wilson counties are enthusiastically invited, and every year the response is robust. The student is nominated by both the principal and faculty of each school before a selection committee of judges reviews and grades them before determining finalists to personally interview.
Each volunteer judge well comprehends the concept of pulling yourself up by your bootstraps to persevere. They carefully collaborate and decide upon the four scholarship recipients before honoring them and their families at a distinguished celebration each May at The Nashville City Club. Witnessing firsthand the happiness, appreciation, and sense of accomplishment of the annual winners and their families is so gratifying!
Pictured here are scholarship recipients Lindsay and Kate, two superstars who were celebrated last week. Kate is headed to Tennessee Tech while Kate enrolls next month at Harvard. The satisfaction, glee and sincere appreciation reflected in their young faces is truly a blessing. Their accomplishments touched everyone present at the recent event. Certainly, we all anticipate learning of their achievements down the road as they pursue their dreams in college and beyond in their young lives!
Bootstraps Foundation empowers high school seniors to continue overcoming obstacles, persevering and maximizing their lives. Hopefully, now you are interested in joining me in supporting this unique charitable endeavor. I invite you to visit their website at Bootstraps.org for further information. No matter which non-profits we each choose to support, we can all agree there is joy in the opportunity of making a positive difference in the worlds of others while we are here.
Wishing you a wonderful remainder of your summer!
